BOOKS – THEOLOGY – LIFE

The Doctrine of Good Works: Reclaiming a Neglected Protestant Teaching – Thomas H. McCall, Caleb T. Friedeman, and Matt T. Friedeman

Oftentimes the topic of “good works” in the Christian life is viewed from a negative perspective. Salvation is by grace through faith, and not by works. This is VERY true, and a foundational belief for Christianity. But the doctrine of good works has often been neglected because of our focus on grace alone through faith alone.

In this new book on the doctrine of good works, the argument is made for the necessity of good works in the life of the Christian. Not that they are a requirement for salvation, but that they are/should be vital in the Christian life. The authors look at good works in the Old and New Testaments and how crucial they are in both. They continue to develop a theology of good works by showing how both love of God and love of neighbor is living a holy life filled with good works and that these are duties for every Christian. There is a whole chapter looking at case studies of various churches around the world that have made good works a priority for their congregations and how they have impacted the world and those around them as a result.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a stinging and challenging book in the best of ways and should be read by every Christian. It is easy to begin devaluing good works, but if we are truly in God’s Word and following after Him, good works will be a natural part of our lives as believers. This book will spur you on the faith and good works as we all seek to glorify the Lord as His body.
