Who is going to be God’s King? In this imaginative retelling of the story of David, Saul, Jonathan, and Michal found in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, Katy Morgan wonderfully brings out themes of hope, trust, difficulty, and friendship for younger readers. Aimed at a middle-grade level (8-13), it is a story that will lead young readers to engage with God’s Word and discover more of the character of God in the history of His people.
The most important aspect of the story is that it is biblically-rooted, though imaginatively written. You can tell Morgan knows and understands the Old Testament well and attempts to capture the emotions and responses of David and Jonathan in the midst of difficult times for the nation of Israel.
A couple of great features of the book is that it provides a 40-day Bible reading plan through the stories in 1 and 2 Samuel to help kids slowly read through God’s Word themselves. There is also a Book Club discussion guide with questions for each section of the story that is perfect for church and homeschool groups, and personal study.
If you have a middle-grade reader, or just love reading this level yourself (I know I do!), I highly encourage you to check out The Songs of a Warrior. It is a beautiful story that points to Jesus as the one true King, just the message our kids need to hear and read!
