A Good and True Story: Eleven Clues to Understanding Our Universe and Your Place in It – Paul M. Gould

“Our identity is wrapped up in the story of our lives: the story we tell, the story we live in.”

For anyone who is honest, wanting to live a fulfilling life, and not living away in a shell, there are deep questions that face us everyday that deserve to be explored. As creatures created in the image of God and for Him, the desire to find the answers to life’s deepest questions is built-in for all of us. In this very helpful book, Paul Gould explores the story of the world we live in, of God’s creation, and shows how it is truly a good and true story and there is no alternative like it. The Christian story is the greatest possible story.

The subtitle: “Eleven Clues to Understanding Our Universe and Your Place in It,” spells out the outline for the book. Gould looks at eleven different clues that we can see and experience, showing how they point to the greatest story every told, the one that we are living in NOW! These eleven clues include the universe, life itself, species, humans, morality, meaning, happiness, pain, love, beauty, and religion. Gould walks through each of these big topics with the purpose of spelling out the good and true story that God has created and placed us in. All of these clues makes sense of a loving and personal God that has hard-wired meaning and purpose in our lives.

I’d consider this a great exploratory book, especially for skeptics and/or new believers. Gould starts from the beginning, not assuming any specific presuppositions in the reader, and gently nudges the reader to taste of God’s magnificent story by thinking honestly about the universe and the world we live in. This is a great apologetic resource for younger readers who are just beginning to explore these deeper questions as well. If you know anyone at all, no matter what their beliefs, who is open to considering and exploring life’s biggest questions, take this book and share it! It will start great conversations and, by the grace of God, open hearts and minds to God’s good and true story.
