The Thrill of Orthodoxy: Rediscovering the Adventure of Christian Faith – Trevin Wax

The Christian faith is fascinating and thrilling! This is something we often forget as the temptations of the “new” and “better” creep in and take over. Our culture tends to pull us away from orthodoxy in a lot of ways, and Trevix Wax calls us back to embrace the thrill of orthodoxy in the face of current-day heresies that are vying for our attention.

In this encouraging book, Wax uses the old creeds, such as the Apostles creed, the Nicene creed, and the Athanasian creed, to show how the truths that have been historically embraced by the church are truly foundational in sustaining the church in a fruitful and godly way, and they are more than worthy of embrace now! It begins by showing how easy it is to drift from orthodoxy, and how, left to our own devices, this is the usual path. Wax continues by challenging us to rediscover the “adventure” of the historical Christian faith, while also looking at the narrowness of heresy, in the sense that it ends up collapsing into itself, whether than promoting a thriving and living faith. Another aspect of the book is the challenge that our world truly needs a strong, biblical orthodoxy that promotes beauty and truth in order to survive and grow. Orthodoxy is essential. Going back and learning from the truths of Scripture laid out by our early church fathers gives us a vision for a thriving Christian faith in the face of a world that desperately needs it!

This was easily one of the best books that I read in 2022. Two words that would describe are encouraging and challenging. Encouraging as a reminder that we do serve and worship an incredibly fascinating God, not a boring idol made in the image of our own selves, but a God who rules and is personal and acting with his creation. It was challenging in the way it talked about the easiness of drift if we are not careful, and how quickly our culture encourages this drift. Please, every Christian would do well to read this book carefully and thoughtfully. Now, maybe more than ever, its a call to embrace the truths of the Scriptures and reject the truth-rejecting heresies of our world.
